Master's in Public Economics
The four semester study program provides theoretical and empirical components of economic policy analysis at a scientific level. Graduates qualify for occupations in basic public finance research, applied economic research, and policy analysis and consultation. Potential Employers are the Public Finance Chairs of Universities, economic research institutes, ministries, and organizations. Furthermore, the Master’s in Public Economics is optimal preparation for a Doctorate in Economics (see PhD-Fast-Track).
The theoretical and empirical topics of the Master’s Program are demanding. The mandatory core area is based on sound knowledge of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. Having these skills at the start of your studies is therefore an essential requirement in order to complete the program successfully.
The theoretical and econometric knowledge acquired in your undergraduate studies is deepened within the core area of study of the Master’s, so that the students obtain extensive analytical skills for dealing with economic policy issues. Students can specialize in various policy fields or deepen their knowledge in specific economic fields by choosing elective courses from four different fields. For example, students can specialize in labor market policy or in tax policy. The fundamental question of the extent to which government action is necessary in a market economy is represented by its own elective field (Public Policy). In addition, the program offers the opportunity to study macroeconomic policy issues (in the elective field Macroeconomics and Public Policy).
In general, the program focuses on the economic methods of policy analysis. Nevertheless, relevant business or legal knowledge as well as institutional and cross-disciplinary skills can also be acquired within certain elective fields. Furthermore, the program supports the vocational orientation of its graduates by requiring them to complete either a three-month internship or a research project as part of their studies.
The Master of Public Economics is aimed at highly motivated students who are interested in an in-depth scientific analysis in the economic methods of policy analysis and consultation.
