In this article, published in the Industrial and Labor Relations Review, my co-authors and I use the example of the German automotive industry to identify recommendations for unions and policymakers in North America and beyond. We provide an overview of the tools workers and trade unions in Germany use to steer the transition and show how analogous tools could be strengthened or created elsewhere.
