Who can use the library?
The library primarily serves the research, teaching and study purposes of the members of the Freie Universität Berlin (FU).
- For FU students a valid CampusCard is also your user card for the FU libraries.
- FU staff without a FU user card can create a library card on their own via the ZEDAT-Portal (see Libraries).
- Furthermore, anyone can apply for a user card at no charge.
Access to certain electronic resources is only available to FU members.
Where and how do I get information and advice?
Information and advice is available from Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on-site, via telephone 030 838 52117, email bibliothek@wiwiss.fu-berlin.de or via a consultation hour (by arrangement).
Borrowing conditions
Who can borrow media?
Anyone with a valid FU student ID (CampusCard) or a user card. Residence in Berlin or Brandenburg is necessary to borrow items.
Which media can be borrowed?
Most books and journals are available for loan and can be requested via the Library Portal Primo.
Books from our ‘Lehrbuchsammlung’ (textbook collection) can usually only be borrowed be FU students.
How do I borrow media?
Books marked ‘Korridor’, ‘Atrium Ost’ and ‘Atrium West/Lehrbuchsammlung’ can be taken from the shelves by the users and checked-out at the circulation desk or at the Selbstausleihbar. Alternatively, the circulation desks of other FU libraries can be chosen as pick-up location for items requested via the Library Portal Primo.
Items marked as ‘Magazin’ must be requested via Primo.
How long can I borrow media?
The loan period is usually 4 weeks, for books from the textbook collection 2 weeks.
The loan period can be shortened for titles that are frequently requested.
Where and how can I extend the loan period?
The loan period can be extended for up to 26 weeks, provided that no other user has requested the item. The renewal is usually carried out by the user in the library portal Primo in the user account (see Primo Login and My Account). The loan period can also be extended at the circulation desk.
How much is the borrowing fee?
Borrowing is generally free of charge. If the loan period is exceeded, a reminder may be sent for a fee (according to the fee schedule).
Terms of use of electronic resources
FU members or users in the FU libraries have access to licensed e-resources. The terms and conditions of use for e-resources are laid down in the licensing agreements concluded between the Freie Universität Berlin and the providers / licensors of electronic products.
By using the e-resources, users agree to abide by these terms and conditions of use.
